What the Holidays are all about

I admit it…..I love giving gifts during the holidays.  I can’t wait to see the look on someone’s face when I blow them away with the latest and greatest- whether it’s fishing gear for my husband, a ninja for my mom, or the LOL dollhouse for Ella…..I enjoy bringing joy to others.

Here’s the problem……I end up putting myself into some pretty sticky financial situations doing it. In fact this year has been a tough one for us. Needless to say, I’ve been feeling pretty down thinking about Christmas and all of the things I won’t be able to give my loved ones for the holidays.

At least that’s how I felt until I watched the video I’m going to share with you below. Talk about a punch in the face.  I have so many blessings in my life, even if I’m broke. I have a roof over my head, a vehicle, a job, and an incredible family.  Sometimes we all get caught up in the Christmas gift giving that gets shoved down our throats in commercials and through social media. This video is a good reminder of how blessed most of us truly are.

It’s ok to feel down about things you may not be able to buy or do, but think about the struggles of others. I have a friend whose son is going through cancer treatments.  Another friend who just lost a loved one, and yet another who has to find a new place to live. I can almost guarantee as tough as you have it- there is someone else’s shoes you would hate to be wearing. I get so caught up in the season that I forgot the true “reason for the season”.

The gift I’m going to give my family this year is my time. I’m going to go ice fishing with my husband like he’s asked me to do for years. I’m going to sled down Avalanche hill with Ella and then make hot chocolate with marshmallows. They might be disappointed that it’s going to be a lean Christmas at first, but I think the memories we will create will completely overshadow the commercial “stuff” that we skipped this year.

Watch that cool video here!
