What to know before you buy a puppy.

Pippa, rescued from Chicago French Bulldog Rescue.

A couple of weeks ago, my friend and co-founder of Stop Online Puppy Mills,  Janie and I were having lunch. When we came out of the restaurant, we looked in the park and there was an adorable French Bulldog puppy. Since we both have rescue Frenchies, we had to go see the puppy. And of course, it was adorable.
It was a cute young couple that had just gotten the puppy a few weeks ago and they were clearly in love. As we sat on the ground and made fools of ourselves loving on the dog, we asked them some questions. And to our dismay, we discovered their dog was the product of a puppy mill. Did they know? No. Did they miss all the signs when they bought their dog? Unfortunately, they did.
September is Puppy Mill Awareness Month.  And as more people become aware, puppy mills get smarter and smarter, more deceptive and creative in hiding their true identity.  They sell through puppy websites that mask who the breeder really is. Websites that use high pressure, commissioned sales people that weave a story full of half truths and downright lies.
So if you’re going to add a puppy to your family, please take a moment and learn how to spot a puppy mill seller. What people do not think about is… it’s not about the puppy. It’s about it’s forgotten mom and dad. They puppy gets a loving home. But it’s mom and dad are stuck in a place that only values their puppy production. They get no love, no vet care, they never get to chase a ball on the grass or take a walk in the woods. Their life is simply a cage with enough food to get by.
We’ve put together information to help you identify a bad breeder and what to avoid. You’ll find it here. Before you buy, get educated. Better yet…. before you buy, adopt.
