Thinking about a summer vacation? There are so many great places to take your dog in Michigan for a getaway. I’ve always been a camper and what a perfect way to include your dog. If you choose the right campground, you can find ways to entertain the pups all day long. From a long hike to swimming, my dogs have always loved the camping experience.
But now is a good time to start planning ahead. State and national parks reserve sites in advance and go fast. State forest campgrounds are usually first come/first serve. But they are still busy on the weekends, so maybe opt for a midweek trip.
I love the state forest campgrounds in the U.P. Many have sites on small lakes that offer a way for the dogs to swim and play without a lot of other people being around. The hike from the upper falls to the lower fall at Tahquamenon Falls is an all day trip that will insure you have a tired dog at the end of the day. And walking the beach at Whitefish Point is always beautiful.
If you’re fine getting to your campsite and then staying put, the Mouth of the Two Hearted River is the perfect dog camping trip. The 20+ miles of dirt road to get there keeps the crowds down. But the beach is incredible and perfect for dog play.
There are also many other ways to take the dogs on your adventure. From dog friendly homes for rent to hotels, paddle trips and backpacking. The key is to plan ahead when possible.
Here are some other ideas to explore from Pure Michigan. But whatever you decide, plan your trip with a few options so your dog is always comfortable and having fun. Then you’ll have fun too!
