The snow is melting quickly and spring is really on the horizon. There are so many great things about spring including later sunsets and more time to walk with the dogs. But there is one problem that I always struggle to overcome, and that is getting Pippa to go outside when it’s raining to do her business. She loves to swim but for some reason, the rain is something she just won’t do.
Do you have a rain adverse dog too? Here are some tips that might help get your through smelly wet dog dirty feet season.
First, try a rain coat. I have a rain jacket with a hood for Pippa and if it is only sprinkling or raining lightly, that seems to work fine for her.
If not a rain coat, you may have to be the one to wear the rain jacket and hold an umbrella for them. I know, it sounds like you’re spoiling them but it can work. I had a dog that as long as I took her out with an umbrella, she was great. Either way, it’s better than an accident on your clean rug.
Do you have a covered patio or a garage that connects to your house? If so, think about buying an apartment pee pad with fake grass. Some dogs will use them easily and you can hose them off frequently. Always give them a treat the second they are done doing their business so they know this is a good thing.
If you have a fenced yard but no covered patio, you can use a tarp and make a covered corner of the yard. I have a friend with a small open sided tent they set up just in the spring.
It is always tough to change behavior and if your dog is rain adverse, you will probably never find a way for them to like it. So think like a dog, make it easy to stay dry and you should be able to find a solution. If not…. there are always puppy pads.
