Why do dogs dig before their nap?

So many things dog do are instinctual, including digging in their bed. Sometimes, I laugh because my dog Bailey will dig, turn circles, dig more, turn more circles… it seems like forever before he finally lays down. My other dog Pippa just plops down.
When dogs were living in the wild, they had to make their bed by digging, moving stones and sticks, creating a place to curl up and snooze. They also had to look for predators and bugs before snuggling in. And that instinct has survived for thousands of years.
There are some other reasons dogs dig too. If they share a bed, many times they are checking for other scents and trying cover the bed with their scent. They might be looking for toys or treats, a comfy bed is a great place to hide them. And if they are an older dog, they may be signaling that they have some aches and pains.
So find your dog a bed that is comfy and more like a nest. I use the poof  beds that they burrow into. Perfect both dogs. And then sit back and watch them dig away. It’s all about comfort!
