Check your dog’s microchip.

upnorthdogblog-2
I’m sleeping well because my microchip is up to date.

One of the best investments you can make in your dog or cat is to have them microchipped. As careful as we all are with our fur kids, accidents do happen and they do escape. Or worse, someone takes your dog. We have all read stories of a long lost pet reunited with their family after someone found them and checked to see if they were chipped. It’s cheap insurance to help get them  home.

But what do  you do if the microchip company goes out of business? That recently happened and instead of transferring their database to another company, Save a Life Microchips just disappeared. And that could be a disaster for pet parents who thought they had protected their pets.

How do you know what company has your dog’s microchip? Find the original paperwork and see who the chip is registered with. Some of the bigger companies include AKC Reunite, HomeAgain, Petkey and PetLink. These companies are all still in business. But if your paper work shows your chip was registered with Save a Life, you will need to re-register with another company.

How do you do that? If you have your chip number, it’s relatively easy. Just decide which company you want to use, go to their website and follow their instructions.

If you do not have the chip number, your vet or the humane shelter can scan your pet and retrieve the number for you. Then proceed to registration.

Double checking to make sure your dog is not registered with Save a Life will help you sleep better and will help make sure your dog returns home if it ever gets away.
