Halloween is Sunday and it can be a fun day for your dog too. Pippa loves kids. So we always sit in our yard and hand out candy. We stay inside the fence and the kids come up to the gate. They can still pet her but she stays safe, inside the fence.
There are a few things to keep in mind for making sure your dog has a safe and fun Halloween too. The first is keeping them safe. Make sure they cannot escape. If they are door darters, keeping them crated or in another room while trick or treaters come to your door.
The other problem is candy. We all know dogs shouldn’t eat candy. So be careful to keep the treats out of your dog’s reach. One year, my sister’s English Setter found the pumpkin full of treats, in the middle of the night. When they came down for breakfast, there were little wrappers everywhere and a dog that had made quite a mess. Fortunately, she was ok, but it’s something to avoid at all cost.
And…. once again, here’s the Xylitol warning. Sugarless gum contains Xylitol. So does some peanut butters and other sugarless candy. Xylitol is deadly for dogs and you need to see an emergency vet ASAP if your dog eats anything containing Xylitol. So, please keep an eye out for those treats in the candy too.
